We invite you to submit a proposal for the 2017 National Havurah Committee Summer Institute, to be held July 31-August 6, at The University of Hartford in West Hartford, CT.
The National Havurah Committee is a network of diverse individuals and communities dedicated to Jewish living and learning, community building, and tikkun olam (repairing the world). As a Jewish community, we are non-denominational, multi-generational, egalitarian, and volunteer-run.
This Call for Proposals covers applications for three separate positions: course teacher, Timbrel Artist-in-Residence, and Liturgist-in Residence. See below for details concerning the three programs and find the one most applicable to you. You are welcome to apply for more than one program.
Each of these positions includes a credit for free tuition, room and board, and program admissions to the Institute; the Artist-in-Residence also receives a stipend and a small budget. Single-room supplements, extra fees for special services, and travel costs to and from Hartford are the responsibility of the registrant; however, you can apply for a travel grant if necessary. NHC membership dues are required of all registrants, including teachers, Artists-in-Residence, and Liturgists-in-Residence.
At the NHC, every student is a teacher and every teacher is a student. Course teachers, Artists-in-Residence, and Liturgists-in-Residence reflect the diversity of our community, representing a wide range of ages, professions, and home communities, and they are encouraged to participate fully in all Institute programming throughout the week.
Please note that the first full day of this year’s Institute coincides with Tisha b’Av. Courses will meet normally on that day, although the schedule may be modified. Course proposals should specify whether the first day’s programming will be suitable for members of our community who refrain from Torah study, listening to music, and other joyous activities on Tisha b’Av. (This is not a mandatory criterion for acceptance.) Any programs geared for the entire community on that day should adhere to those practices.
Proposals for all three programs, to be submitted online, are due by Tuesday, February 28 at 11:59 pm. Proposals received after this date will not be considered. Please contact the Course Committee, Artist-in-Residence Committee, or Liturgist-in-Residence Committee if you have any questions.

Courses at the NHC Summer Institute deal with a wide variety of Jewish subjects and themes: text study, religious life, spirituality, contemporary issues, history, literature, art, music, meditation, and many more. The Course Committee aims for a balance of topics and styles of courses. Teachers should expect a diverse group of students with differing viewpoints, and should be open to lively discussion in an environment that promotes openness and mutual respect. Course enrollment is generally capped at twenty to ensure a participatory atmosphere.
Most courses meet for four 90-minute sessions (Tuesday-Friday), either in the morning or the afternoon. Participants select their courses when they register for the Institute. In some circumstances, the Course Committee will also consider proposals for courses that will meet in an extended format of four 2½-hour sessions.
Courses may not be not restricted by gender, age, religious practice, or ideology. Some courses may require specific background (such as Hebrew reading skills, previous experience studying Jewish texts, or the ability to read music); please describe the expectations clearly in your application. Proposals to teach specific liturgical skills (e.g. reading from the Torah) are not generally accepted.
If you and another person are proposing to co-teach a course, please submit a single online course proposal with the information for both teachers. (If two people are co-teaching a course, each teacher receives half credit toward Institute fees.) You may submit up to two course proposals; please complete the online form for each course you are submitting. To encourage a mix of new and long-time teachers, those who have taught at the last three consecutive Summer Institutes are not eligible to apply this year.

Timbrel Artist-in-Residence Proposals
The Timbrel Artist-in-Residence Program seeks artists with a talent and passion to share at the 2017 Havurah Institute. The selected artists will receive tuition credit and other assistance to attend the Institute, as well as a stipend of ($1200).
Each Artist-in-Residence will teach a four-session course (as described above), and will also offer additional programming aimed at the whole community. Artists from all disciplines are encouraged to apply. Past artists have represented the disciplines of music (vocal and instrumental), theater and story-telling, puppetry, poetry, visual arts, and dance. Click here to apply. Those applying for the Artist-in-Residence program may also choose to have their proposed course considered by the Course Committee, without the need for a separate application.
NHC Liturgist-in-Residence Proposals
The Liturgist-in-Residence will offer a series of special programs open to the community related to creating liturgy and ritual. Programming may include a combination of multi-session workshops, innovative prayer experiences, an evening or Shabbat program, and/or a program specifically geared for kids or teens. These programs will be open to the entire community and will be equivalent to teacher-level service (approximately 6-8 contact hours over the week). The LIR’s programming is separate from the courses described above.
We especially welcome applications that share your process of creating or reinterpreting liturgy, writing prayerful poetry, and designing ritual through example, so that others may learn from your work. We are not looking for programs that teach traditional liturgical skills, nusach or service leading methods. While teaching, learning, singing, or matching new, original, or alternative melodies for prayers is appropriate, that should not be the sole focus of the LIR’s programming.
The LIR receives one tuition credit to attend the NHC Summer Institute. If co-Liturgists-in-Residence apply, they will share the tuition credit. There is no stipend with this position.
