Liturgist in Residence

Cantor Linda Hirschhorn, 2nd NHC Liturgist in Residence

Linda Hirschhorn has been selected to be the NHC’s second Liturgist in Residence at the 2012 Summer Institute.

She will be presenting a series of programs all week at the Institute on the theme:Understanding Prayer through Melody and Harmony.

It’s said that singing a prayer is like saying it twice. The Zohar tells us that there are mansions in heaven which can be opened only through song. While most of the time will be spent singing in these workshops, we will make sure we understand each word of the prayer and explore how the meaning of a prayer is conveyed by its melody. What are the key words in the prayer, what feelings do the words and melodies elicit in you personally and what significance are these words to us as a community. Linda is a singer, songwriter, and director of Vocalot. who joins us from Oakland, California, where she is the director of Vocalot and the cantor at Temple Beth Shalom in San Leandro, California.

Linda is known to the NHC community – she was our Artist in Residence back in Hartford in 1993. We're excited to welcome her back!

The Liturgist Residency was established by the editors of Let Us Sing! (L'chu N'ran'nah) , as thanks and to give back to the NHC community that has supported the bencher's success since it was published in 2010.
