Housing
Accommodations at Pearlstone area mix of youth hostel dorms and hotel style rooms. Hotel rooms have ensuite bathrooms and one or two queen beds. Most also have either a foldout couch or sleeper chair. The youth hostel dorm has up to six beds per room and shared bathrooms. Youth hostel beds are a mix of bunk beds and twins. If you’re registering for a family of four or more, you’ll be able to select an entire room in the dorm.

Pricing
Our prices depend on (1) registrants’ age and (2) whether you’re choosing housing in a hotel room or a youth hostel room. Base prices are per person and include housing, food, and programming. For hotel rooms, the base pricing assuming double occupancy. Most people will pay only the base price, but there will also be a single supplement fee for anyone staying alone in a hotel room and an extra room fee of for families with fewer than three young children who take two adjoining hotel rooms.
The “base prices” represent the NHC’s break even point.
When you register, you be able to easily pay the base price or pay a sliding scale price that is 10% or 20% less than the base price. (And if you’re able to pay more than the base price, we encourage you to do so. That supports registration fees for others and contributes to our year round costs.)
We’re committed to making Summer Institute financially accessible for as many people as possible. - Applying for a work study job. This year, we’re looking for people to work both before and during Institute.
- Applying to be a counselor at Kids’ Camp.
- Applying for a Zeitler Fellowship. This cohort of young adults pay just $200 to attend Institute. Applications are due on April 4th.
- Applying for a grant. The Grants team members are committed to discretion, and to meeting the needs of community members. Awards are limited by NHC’s annual budget.
If you’re applying for work study jobs, counselor positions, or a grant, you will need to do so before you register for Institute. If you apply by April 10th, we’ll give you an answer before registration opens on April 25th. This way, you’ll be able to register and choose classes as soon as registration opens.
Transportation
Pearlstone is about thirty miles from Baltimore. The closest airport is Thurgood Marshall (formerly BWI) and the closest Amtrak station is in Baltimore. When registration opens, we’ll have a ride board set up where you can look for a ride if you need one or offer a ride if you have space in your car. Covid Policy
Proof of vaccination will be required for everyone 5 and older. Testing will be required the day Institute begins and at least 2 or 3 times during Institute. There will be both indoor and outdoor spaces for classes and dining. Masking will be required indoors except while eating. The Covid policy will be further refined before registration opens and depending on circumstances may be tweaked closer to the event.
