Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers): The Big Picture with Joe Rosenstein  Location: Vineyard

In this workshop, I will discuss the major themes in Pirkei Avot, and other prominent themes. It is hard to extract the “big picture” from studying Avot because one mishnah usually has little to do thematically with the mishnah that precedes it or the mishnah that follows it.

Song Share with Benj Kamm and Emma Kippley Ogman  Location: Tent–Far Side

Share a tune, learn a tune (or several)! We’ll focus on rounds, zipper songs, and layer songs — mostly multi-parts songs without too many words. Bring a song to share — we have a few in mind but the best part will be learning together.

TUESDAY AFTERNOON WORKSHOPS 3:15-4:15pm

Cultivating Sh’khinah, Divine Presence: Sh’ma Yisrael with Liturgist in Residence, T’mimah Ickovits Location: Deck

Jewish Mantra. It is a declaration of the underlying unity beneath the diversity. Torah tells us to chant it twice daily. The medieval mystic Joseph Gikatilla, in his masterpiece Gates of Light (Sha-arey Orah), teaches that prophets chanted Sh’ma to receive Prophecy (Ruah Hakodesh, Holy Spirit). The six words are related to the six directions of our local cosmos. When a Jew retires for the evening or eternity, tradition points to
Sh’ma as a Jew’s final words.

During this session, we will play with this verse, consider the holographic properties of each word, and work with partners to deepen our experience and cultivate insights into this multivalenced Torah verse.

LATE NIGHT PROGRAMS 9:30-11pm

The Elephant in the Room facilitated by Judith Geller  Location: Tent–Far Side

We’ve all gathered at Institute with so many things happening in our lives. We have not met as a community since October 7th, and in addition to our personal lives we have been experiencing the situation in Israel/Palestine. We want to offer a safe place for listening and being listened to, whatever your experience or opinions about what is going on. Using a talking stick, we will each have the opportunity to share our feelings and thoughts and to witness other’s feelings and thoughts. We will have a chance to engage in grounding techniques during the gathering to help us stay present and to be able to witness others’ expressions of their experience. This will not be a conversation, but a witnessing of each other with attention and compassion.

The Elephant in the Room

The room is
almost all
elephant.
Almost none
of it isn’t.
Pretty much
solid elephant.
So there’s no
room to talk
about it.
